His company, Third Man Records, which is based in Nashville and Detroit, produces vinyl records and sells them from stores at its offices. White used to be exclusively a rock star-he was half of the White Stripes-but his interests are diverse, and he has lately stopped touring and writing to dispose of them. “Anyway, it’s a place I can go and write songs and shake up my environment,” he continued. “If you could take care of it and pass it along, it’s good.” The car travelled through farm fields beneath a dome of blue sky. “I’m a believer in nobody owns anything,” he said. He saw himself more as a custodian of the Nelson house than as its owner. He used to drive around the city looking for thrown-out furniture, and sometimes he found Nelson sofas and chairs and restored them. White is forty-one, and since his adolescence, in Detroit, when he was an upholsterer’s apprentice, he has been avidly interested in modern design. “A George Nelson house, there’s not too many of those,” White said in a car on the way there. The house was designed by George Nelson, a figure in American modernism, who mostly designed furniture. He wasn’t planning to live in it, except perhaps occasionally on retreats-he lives in Nashville. Last summer, Jack White bought a house in Kalamazoo, Michigan, that he had seen only in photographs. The most-common song on our list won’t surprise you (all together now: dunnn, dun-DUN-dun, dun, dunnn, dunnnnnn), but just how obscure some of the others are might, hits and deep cuts from their first album to their last. They dig deeper into the catalog than you might expect too. By the band’s end, the Stripes were bringing in genres beyond their beloved blues and garage-rock (see the cabaret of “The Nurse” or mariachi of their Patti Page cover “Conquest”), but these artists take their songs even further afield. So no surprise our list below includes a wide variety of genres, from orchestral bowers to soul belters, bluegrass pickers to reggae toasters. With just two pieces, combining rudimentary guitar riffs from Jack and cavewoman drumming from Meg, the band’s output leaves plenty of open space to welcome in other interpretations. But part of it also reflects the stripped-down nature of that band’s work. Part of that is because that band had actual hits I doubt there’s anything on his new album that’s gonna do “Seven Nation Army” numbers. Though by this point Jack’s released more solo and side-project music than the Stripes’ entire six-album discography, his and Meg’s music still gets covered far more than the rest. Okay, okay – we’re of course talking about The White Stripes. So it felt time to look back at his most iconic musical project: Goober & the Peas. The always prolific Jack White releases his second album of 2022 today.
